Treaty, First Nations and Metis Education

December 22, 2023

Treaty Education

Our division and all of our schools are situated on Treaty 6 land and traditional homeland of the Métis.

Saskatchewan was the first province in Canada to introduce mandatory kindergarten - Grade 12 treaty education in 2007. The Ministry of Education works closely with the Office of the Treaty Commissioner and other partners to develop, renew and distribute classroom resources to teach about treaties.

More information is available on the Treaty Education section of the Ministry of Education website.

Indigenous Languages

Curriculum Aims and Goals

Language reflects culture and defines a people. The curriculum for K-12 is an integrated model promoting the growth and development of students' communication skills in an Indigenous language and thereby enhancing cultural awareness.

The major goals of the curriculum are:

  • to promote student participation in varied learning situations and activities that will assist them in acquiring listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in an Indigenous or Michif language;
  • to develop an understanding and an appreciation of Indigenous and Métis cultures through language;
  • to develop students' listening skills which will assist them in learning an Indigenous language in various social contexts and situations;
  • to encourage enjoyment of learning to converse and to write in an Indigenous or Michif language;
  • to cultivate positive personal and social growth through use of an Indigenous or Michif language;
  • to encourage students to continue to acquire fluency through independent study with Elders and other fluent speakers.
